What quite content does Oculus really need?

What quite content does Oculus really need? Whenever an industry promotes a replacement entertainment platform — colour television , the VCR, Blu-ray, VR — it faces an equivalent classic quandary. Consumers won't invest during a new system unless there's great content available for it. Meanwhile, great independent content producers won't make that material until the platform features a lot of users. So how do initial platform creators like Oculus get that content to start with? They buy it. They buy it by building internal content studios, by buying already-successful studios (as Oculus did in November by acquiring the maker of Beat Saber), and by directly paying, subsidizing and assisting outside developers to form what they hope is compelling, platform-defining content. Modern VR's top consumer category has been games. So when Facebook hires a seasoned game executive like Mike Verdu to run its overall AR/VR content operation, what the corporate is basically saying i...

The Oculus Quest headset might arrive in this September

Oculus’ rumored sequel to the search could be close at hand. Historically reliable leaker WalkingCat has posted images (via Road to VR) of what’s believed to be a replacement version of the computer game headset that might arrive on September 15th. While these are clearly generic press shots, they’re supported by a Reddit leak of what appears to be a prototype of an equivalent device.

There are not any guarantees either image set represents a finished product. If they are doing , though, there might be major changes future . RtVR noted that the present Quest’s IPD (interpupillary distance) slider has vanished, suggesting that you’ll be watching one large display instead of two. That, in turn, hints at a possible switch from OLED to an LCD like that found within the Rift S. It wouldn’t have an equivalent contrast ratio, but it might be key to jumping to a claimed 90Hz or maybe 120Hz refresh rate rather than the 72Hz within the existing model.

The controllers may need changed, too. the pictures hint that Oculus might use input almost like the Touch hardware that came with the Rift CV1 — an honest thing for veterans who believe the search and Rift S controllers were steps backward.

Nor would it have previously had velcro side straps, which would have been expected years later. It’s not certain how the mechanism works, but it could involve a spring system that saves you from having to regulate the fit. There’s no triangular strap opening to assist the headset stay in situ , either, supporting talk that the new Quest is considerably lighter.

There are still some unknowns. It’s not clear what would power the new Quest, although faster refresh rates would dictate a more moderen platform like Qualcomm’s XR2. If these images are accurate, though, the remake of Oculus’ stand-alone headset could have a couple of welcome upgrades, albeit with a couple of tradeoffs.
