What quite content does Oculus really need?

What quite content does Oculus really need? Whenever an industry promotes a replacement entertainment platform — colour television , the VCR, Blu-ray, VR — it faces an equivalent classic quandary. Consumers won't invest during a new system unless there's great content available for it. Meanwhile, great independent content producers won't make that material until the platform features a lot of users. So how do initial platform creators like Oculus get that content to start with? They buy it. They buy it by building internal content studios, by buying already-successful studios (as Oculus did in November by acquiring the maker of Beat Saber), and by directly paying, subsidizing and assisting outside developers to form what they hope is compelling, platform-defining content. Modern VR's top consumer category has been games. So when Facebook hires a seasoned game executive like Mike Verdu to run its overall AR/VR content operation, what the corporate is basically saying i...

Facebook is reportedly performing on a replacement flagship virtual-reality headset to exchange the Oculus Quest

Facebook is reportedly performing on a replacement flagship virtual-reality headset to exchange the Oculus Quest

Facebook bet $2 billion on computer game back in 2014 when it bought Oculus VR, the startup that went from Silicon Valley darling to Facebook subsidiary in only a couple of short years.

The company has continued its commitment to Virtual Reality within the years since, and its most successful product so far — the $400 standalone Oculus Quest headset — is reportedly getting a replacement version that's lighter and more powerful than its predecessor.

That's consistent with a replacement piece from Bloomberg, which reports that Facebook has several versions of the new Quest within the works. Facebook has yet to officially announce a replacement version of the Oculus Quest.

The new headset was planned for a late 2020 launch, consistent with Bloomberg, but might not hit that focus on due to the continued coronavirus pandemic.

Facebook has reportedly not settled on the ultimate design and specs for the search successor, but the overall vision appears to be to form it smaller and lighter, and for its screen to possess higher fidelity than the first model.

The Quest has been a rare success within the struggling virtual-reality market. The headset is sold out, and has been for a few time — a measure of Facebook's inability to manufacture or restock VR headsets during an epidemic and of consumer interest.

Unlike Facebook's higher end Oculus Rift , which needs a strong PC to function, and therefore the Oculus Go, which has limited capability due to its relatively low horse power, the Oculus Quest occupies a middle ground between super hi-fi and accessibility. That middle ground has proved fertile for sowing consumer interest in buying VR headsets — a problem that's plagued computer game since the first '90s.

Facebook didn't respond immediately to Business Insider's request for comment.
